P.L.I.M.s--POLARIZED LIGHT IMAGING MACHINES

A number of my artworks have employed clear cellophane "sandwiched" between plastic polarizers to create colorful images by selectively filtering out various wavelengths of light. This phenomenon is neither an original discovery by me, nor am I the only artist to have employed this technique. What is unique, perhaps, to my artworks, is the method of employing two separate "partial sandwiches", each of which contains only one polarizing filter and one set of cellophane "overlays". These are aligned in an A-B/B-A arrangement with "A" being one polarizing filter and "B" being one set of of cellophane overlays. Finally, the B-A combination is rotated behind the A-B combinatioon by means of a motor and a set of rollers placed along the circumference of the circular plates which hold the polarizing sheet and the cellophane in close contact with each other. The result of this technique is two-fold: 1) a continuously changing color display; 2) a continuously changing image as the two sets of cellophane overlays transit past each other. The two images shown above are created by the very same plates, only with the back plate rotated 180 degrees. The overall effect is quite striking and mesmerizing, expecially when accompanied by a musical sound-track, and the colors perceived by the viewer are those of "pure light", itself! Hence, the generic term I have given to these artworks, i.e., "polarized light imaging machines (P.L.I.M.)."
