SPIRE 1996.11

Song of Spire

Behold the towering Spire,
Which points to things much higher
Than we can see from Earth's low vantage spot.
It points above, to places far beyond:
To timeless beauty and to thoughts profound
Resounding throughout the galaxy entire!
It shouts a silent prayer to the stars: "Inspire
Us, You who know much more than we.
Teach us to love each other and be free
Of petty hatreds, ugly greed and sin.
Teach us not how to lose, but how all can win.
Protect us from a fate both dread and dire...
Teach us to tower upwards, like the Spire."
